"... the tallest building had sad seen before this was precisely two stories tall." pg-455 p-2
This passage is when he is entering the city of Nairobi. He is in shock and awe that a building is taller than a tree. He is amazed that people build buildings that look like they could stand there for ever. He is just amazed that buildings exist that are so big.
I am reading this thinking to myself "I have seen buildings this big my entire life no biggy" and he is just so amazed. He takes in this huge thing and is just awed by the huge buildings. Also think about it this way, he thought haveing a house made out of mud was cool. Now he is seeing buildings that "touch the sky"

Q-have you ever been totally awed to the point of silence.

"He revealed a jagged scar at he corner of his jaw" pg-425 p-3
A SPLA officer is talking about his attempted execution. He was on a ridge when he got shot in the back of his head. This man survived getting shot in the head then woke up and walked for three days to a town so he could be helped. Imagine walking while bleeding from a massive head wound.
I was surprised because it didn't kill him because it says that it went though his jaw, so I was thinking where could you shoot someone in the back of the head without damaging their spin. The answer nowhere. It is imposibul to get shot in the back of the head and not at least get paralized. So HA Dave Eggers.

Have you ever been in huge amounts of pain and you had to either think straight or be alone?
