"... education will be your mother." pg-297 p-5
This quote is important because it shows that people know that an educated people will stop wars. I think that is interesting that people think that education is total crap even though they don't know how to write their name. I think that it shows that some of these boys are wanting to take part in the war for reasons involving vengeance.
I thought about this quote and realized the irony of me doing this quote as homework because this man is saying this because he thinks that people don't care about education, while I use this quote to better my education. It makes me think about how is was considered a late reader and writer when I learned to read at age 7 while these boys are considered lucky to be able to read at all.

Q: Respond on your opinion on the phrase "Ignorance is bliss."

"After they forced me to eat all that garbage, I began to vomit. I vomited for hours that night, I was sick for two days. I couldn't stand. I couldn't work. Akol helped me, and I began to feel better. But when I was recovering I had an idea. I decided to be sick all the time." Pg-277 P-1
This shows that he is so desperate to stop working that he is making himself vomit (you find out about this farther down the page) to stop. He is so unhappy that he would rather be puking 24/7. I think that this level of desparation is truly tragic.
I like this quote because it reminded me of a story of a man in prison. He hatted prison so much that he ATE silver were to get out of being in prison. Everytime he returned to the prison he would eat a spoon and he would be back in the hospital, which has better conditions. I canot imagine being so desperate. that I would eat spoons.

Q: have you ever been happy to be ill?

  1. Quote #1: I think you did good responding to the quote, because it connects and "understands" the quotation. I think that people who dislike education are lazy, or just don't get the point. It is ironic, but then you could say everything is ironic.
Question #1: "Ignorance is Bliss" means that your better of not knowing certain things. For example if you knew everything bad about everything, but nothing good, you woulden't do anything.
Quote #1: I agree with most of your perception, because he did get sick on purpose. I think that he also did it, so he could escape. And yes, being that depressed IS tragic.
Question #2:No I have not been very happy to be ill, because although I sometimes miss school, I would much rather be working than sick. Being sick is no fun, unless you get something exceptionally good. Hatted, Canot, is was considered, lol, however I can't talk because I didn't check my comment for grammatical errors!

  2. Quote 1 - I noticed that the people in the camps begin to make an effort to educate the boys as well. I think the adults in the camp realize that the key to rebuilding Sudan after the war is an education, even though many boys only want to fight and get revenge on the murahaleen. Achak would be considered a boy who was thankful to have an education, unlike others.
Question 1 - I think the phrase "ignorance is bliss" is referring to when you don't know about something but it turns out that if you did know it would be worse than not knowing (if that makes sense...). There is an example of this in the book when Achak is given the chance to talk to someone from Marial Bai but he chooses to be ignorant because he doesn't want to know if his family is dead. Achak talks about a boy who found out his family was dead and who said that he wished he did not know.
Quote 2 - I think that there are many examples like this quote when the boys chose to do something unsatisfactory instead of something worse. In this quote Moses chose to be sick instead of working as a slave. He was so desperate to stop working that he ate garbage. In the prison story the guy was desperate enough to eat a spoon.
Question 2 - I have been happy to be ill occasionally for numerous reasons. Even though I was sick I have never purposely made myself sick, like Moses did by eating garbage or eating a spoon. Still, I can understand why they did it.

  3. Quote #1: Yes, it is very good that they are being educated, but they may be pushng them too hard. Putting too much pressure on them to do good in school. "Our country is in shambles, and the only way we can reclaim it is to learn!" Although he is correct when he says that the boys have nothing left but education.
Question #1: In this use of ignorance is bliss it means that sometimes you may want to know something, but when you know it, you wish you didn't. A boy told Acak that he would rather not know that his parents are dead, so that there would be a chance that they still would be alive.
Quote #2: Once he was sick, and saw that he didn't have to work anymore, he wanted to be sick all of the time. I used to do this when I was very little. I would be sick, and see that I didn't have to go to school, and could chill at home. So the next day I would pretend to be sick. I was always caught, but that's because I wasn't actually sick. moses forced him self to be sick, and not just sick but very ill.
question #2: Actually, once I was happy when I was sick. I just didn't want to go to school one day. More than usual. Just kidding. So that night i was hoping that I would be sick the next day. I was. And I was very happy.
